About this service

Foot and leg pain

Finding the cause comes first

Pain in the feet, ankles or lower legs can come from tendons, joints, nerves, bones or the way load is shared through the foot. Common examples include heel and arch pain, Achilles pain, pain in the ball of the foot, shin pain and ankle pain after a sprain.

We start by asking how the pain began, what makes it better or worse and what you want to get back to. We then examine your feet and legs, look at how you walk or run, including Zebris gait analysis at our Shellharbour Village clinic, and check your footwear.

What treatment can involve

  • A clear explanation of the likely cause
  • Load management and a graded strengthening plan
  • Footwear advice, and taping, padding or custom orthotics where they help
  • Referral for imaging or to another health professional when needed

Many foot and leg problems improve with a plan that suits the cause. If the pain is severe, started after a fall or injury, or comes with swelling, numbness or a change in colour, book sooner rather than waiting.

Frequently asked questions about Foot and leg pain

Should I see a podiatrist about my pain?

Podiatrists have been expertly trained (at university) to specifically understand the way the foot works and the reasons why people have pain in their feet and legs. If you are suffering from an injury that is not improving or have recurrent pain or loss of movement in the lower limb then a podiatrist can help you.

My feet are sore when I first get up in the morning and after sitting down. Google has told me I have plantar fasciitis. Can you help?

Yes! This is a common presentation of foot pain and often relates to pain in the heel. We will assess your foot, which may involve referral for x-ray or an ultrasound, and develop a treatment plan.

Why do feet get sore?

The feet do a lot of week each day. Each step transfers up to 3 times your body weight through the foot. It takes time for the feet to adapt to changes in their use and this is often when they first become sore. Increasing exercise, change in jobs, traveling or even moving house can be enough to start the foot pain cycle.

Can High Intensity Laser Therapy help foot and leg pain?

In many cases, yes. If you’re experiencing ongoing foot or leg pain that hasn’t improved with rest, stretching, orthotics or other conservative treatments, High Intensity Laser Therapy may be an effective option.

High Intensity Laser Therapy works by reducing pain and inflammation while stimulating the body’s natural healing process. It can be beneficial for a range of conditions affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints of the foot and lower leg.

Our podiatrists will identify the underlying cause of your pain and recommend the treatment that’s most likely to help you recover.

Could HIRO TT be relevant?

Persistent foot or leg pain can have several causes. After assessment, the Shellharbour City team can discuss whether HIRO TT high-intensity laser has a reasonable role within a broader care plan.

Suitability, evidence and individual response vary. Assessment comes first, and laser would be an adjunct rather than a stand-alone replacement for diagnosis, load management, exercise or other appropriate care.
