Our approach

Assessment first, orthotics only if they help

Custom orthotics are prescribed in-shoe devices that alter how load is shared across your feet, to ease pain and help you stay active.

Whether you book at Shellharbour Village or Shellharbour City, the process is the same: we find out what is causing your symptoms, look at how you walk and the shoes you rely on, and then talk through the options. Orthotics are one of them, alongside footwear changes, exercises and, for some problems, other treatments.

Why we use 3D scanning

A 3D scan captures the shape of your feet accurately without plaster casts. Combined with your assessment, it gives an individual prescription that is designed with computer-aided design, 3D printed and hand finished in Australia.

At our Shellharbour Village clinic, your assessment includes Zebris gait analysis, which measures the pressure under each step as you walk on our treadmill, so your prescription is based on how your feet actually move.

How it works

Your orthotic journey

Five steps from assessment to review.

  1. Biomechanical assessment

We look at your foot posture, joints and walking pattern to understand what is contributing to your pain. At Shellharbour Village this includes Zebris gait analysis.

  2. 3D scan

Your feet are scanned in a few minutes, with no plaster casting.

  3. Prescription

We combine the scan with your assessment to prescribe orthotics for your feet, footwear and goals.

  4. Fitting

Your orthotics are made in Australia and are usually ready to fit within 1–2 weeks.

  5. Six-week review

We check your progress about six weeks after you receive them and make any adjustments.

Frequently asked questions about Orthotics & biomechanical assessment

Which clinic should I book for orthotics?

Either. Shellharbour Village is at 19/23 Addison Street, with street parking and a council car park behind the building. Shellharbour City is at 4–5/6 Benson Avenue, beside Stockland, with free parking.

Is a 3D scan better than a plaster cast?

It is quicker and cleaner, and captures the shape of your feet without plaster. Your podiatrist combines it with the assessment to write your prescription.

When will my orthotics be ready?

Usually 1–2 weeks after your scan, with a review about six weeks after you start wearing them.

Will they fit my shoes?

We prescribe them around the shoes you wear most, from runners to work shoes. Some slim or fashion shoes have limited room, and we will talk through what works.

How do I claim the cost?

If your extras cover includes orthotics, you can claim your rebate on the spot with HICAPS or Tyro. We confirm the fees first. Medicare does not cover the orthotics themselves, though a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan may cover part of eligible podiatry appointments.
