About this service

Ingrown toenail treatment

Ingrown toenails at our two Shellharbour clinics

We treat ingrown toenails, including minor nail surgery, at Shellharbour Village on Addison Street and at Shellharbour City beside Stockland. Choose whichever suits your day: the village clinic has street parking and a council car park behind the building, with Saturday appointments on some weekends, and parking at Stockland is free.

Matching the treatment to the toe

A first or mild ingrown nail can usually be eased in a normal appointment by removing the sliver of nail that is pressing in. When the same edge keeps returning, a partial nail avulsion under local anaesthetic takes that edge away, and the nail-forming tissue underneath is usually treated with a chemical so the edge is unlikely to return. Our article on what nail surgery involves walks you through the day.

Stopping it coming back

We show you how to trim your nails straight across, check your footwear and talk about what may have caused the problem, so it is less likely to recur.

When to book

Book in if you notice

  • A red, swollen or painful toe beside the nail
  • Pus, bleeding or extra tissue at the nail edge
  • An ingrown nail that keeps coming back
  • A sore toe in a child or teenager

If you live with diabetes, reduced feeling or poor circulation, book promptly. Spreading redness or feeling unwell needs medical attention that day.

Frequently asked questions about Ingrown toenail treatment

Which clinic should I book for an ingrown toenail?

Either. Shellharbour Village is at 19/23 Addison Street and Shellharbour City is at 4–5/6 Benson Avenue, beside Stockland. Choose the one that is easier for you.

How long does healing take after nail surgery?

Everyone heals at a different pace. You take home aftercare instructions, and a follow-up visit is booked so we can see how it is settling.

Can children have ingrown toenails treated?

Yes. They are common in children and teenagers, and we explain the options to both of you before choosing an approach.

Do I need a referral?

No. Book online at either clinic, or call us.
